Hey guys! cool forum.
My avt50 combo is stock - for now.
The highs are really harsh and "chimey" - I am having to back the high eq knob way back to get it to not split my ears/give me a head ache! (like 9:00 to 10:00)
But backing down the treble seems to deaden the sound somewhat overall.
Is this "normal" for these amps? DO I need an external eq? I've read the MXR's work well with other Marshall amps... Is my tube bad?

What channel is the problem on? both? I know I have a little harshness on the distortion channel. I went with a 5751 tube and that tamed it a little bit. Also adding a mid shift seemed to make it better. I have also heard that adding an eq pedal to the loop helps some people.

Both channels...it's not as bad at low volumes, but when I turn it up the highs will split your head open!:] -very brittle!
When I dial back the highs it gets a little "middy" sounding. It looses its livelyness. I cant seem to find a perfect setting.
The midshift looks/sounds cool, I think I will attempt it soon. Also, what about the gain boost mod? Does that drive the tube harder? What exactly does it do to the sound? I had an old tube Trayner years ago (wish I still had it!) that was modded with a pot on the face that you could dial in more "boost" (I think) it made the amp very "alive"...

Also fixr1984, I printed off your mid shift mod from the marshall forums...perhaps you could make a write up for it on this forum for people. THanks man!

Well...I got my hands on a vintage ROSS 10 band EQ (R-10). Wow, what a difference! I was able to dial out the harshness easily and get a very nice sound. I may still try the mid shift mod, but for now the eq really worked wonders. BTW-I am also running through a BBE sonic Maximiser (along with the eq in the effects loop) and the sound is quite amazing, very "alive"! Just thought I would share. Dave

i put an eminence texas heat in my avt50 and it took the harsh high end out. no need for an EQ. i think that the avt speakers are ok at low volume. but anything past 3, they just down right suck..

Wow, I put a Veteran 30 from Warehouse Guitar Speakers (V30 Clone). Sounds awesome! No EQ or anything needed. ...now my avt 412 cab sounds sub par...
